1.10.14 - Whale Sightings on Virginia Aquarium ExcursionWinter wildlife boat trips are scheduled through through the middle of March. In addition to bottle nose dolphins and seabirds, whales have been sighted this season. Tickets are $28 for adults and $24 for children 4-11.

Virginia Aquarium turtle releases are common. Saint Louis, the turtle pictured here was found suffering from embedded fish hooks and released last Fall. This time of year, turtles commonly strand on local beaches cold stunned. While they may appear to have expired, they are often alive.If you come across a stranded turtle or accidently hook a turtle, the Aquarium recommends that you call the stranding response team at 757.385.7575.

Avoiding a Collision Course among Ocean GiantsTidewater Current | Spring 2013 - Historically considered the giants of the sea, whales are literally dwarfed in size and number by a growing fleet of supersized vessels. No match for fast moving mechanical behemoths, a whale is likely to pay with its life if the two collide. To alleviate the threat posed by collisions, research is being conducted and protective measures afforded by the now 40 year old Marine Mammal Protection Act are being developed and adopted.
